The multiverse (or meta-universe) is the hypothetical set of infinite or finite possible universes (including the historical universe we consistently experience) that together comprise everything that exists and can exist: the entirety of space, time, matter, and energy as well as the physical laws and constants that describe them. The term was coined in 1895 by the American philosopher and psychologist William James.
For many years we have been aware of their existence. Super heroes were among the first beings to encounter these variant realities sometimes called parallel universes. According to theory, each reality exists independent, but related in some way to the others. Joined in a cosmic harmony if you will. From my personal travels the cosmoses that make up the multiverse are divided into two types:
Earth universes and variant reality planes.
Earth dimensions resemble our earth universe. People, places, things and history exist similarly to the way they do here. In some cases, they may be identical save for a minute detail. In others the differences are catastrophic. Still, earth dimensions all bare semblance to the earth we are familiar with.
Variant reality planes a planes of existence drastically different from ours. Planets may not exist, physics may work completely differently. Asgard, Olympus, The 4th World, Limbo are all examples of realms such as this.
Currently we are aware of the existence of several earth plane dimensions, most notably, Earth B, which we became aware of during the "Crisis" event. It is only one of 4 other worlds that we are currently aware of.
My colleague, Reed Richards theorizes that there may be a world for every variant thought or choice that any being within a given universe might have. This idea would imply that there is an ever growing, infinite number of world and that time / space are indeed inter woven.
Known Earth Dimensions:
Earth B (alternate to our world, fewer heroes, but X-Men there are allies)
Earth X (Heroes and villains reversed here)
Mirror Earth (The dark Mirror world as the kids call it. Home to dark variants of the occupants of both Earth A and B)
Wasteland (A recently discovered reality in which earth was destroyed by a war between the sentinels and heroes)
